The Life of David Smith

Overcoming hardships with a smile

David was born with a seizure disorder and had to overcome many struggles from a young age. From the 11 brain surgeries he underwent by the age of three, to the immobility he was plagued with until a successful surgery at  the age of eight, David had endured more hardships in his first few years of life than most do in a lifetime. As his mother, Mary (one of the founding mothers of Southwinds) and his sister, Barb, will tell you; he did it all with a smile.

Finding peace in a place to call home

When David was 21, he came to live at Southwinds and his mother remembers the relief she felt that David was going to be able to live independently while receiving the care that he would need. Although his family was sad that he was leaving home, they knew that it was time for him to be on his own, and in his new home he was able to develop into the wonderful person that he is today.
